To prepare a new block for trees, we grow grass ( in this case ryegrass) in the paddock which we spray before it sets seed. The grass then dies and rots on top of the soil. It slowly breaks down into organic matter and microbial organisms eat the organic matter, turning it into nutrients that the plants can uptake. When it comes time for the trees getting planted, the soil has enough nutrients to hopefully set the new trees up for a good start to their life.
